Web design for painters, with a desk for the agents

Households compare photos and cost. Agents and strata managers want a licensed, insured painter who can start on Monday and invoice on Friday. One site serves both.

Two audiences, two kinds of page

Painters rarely take emergency calls. The urgent job is a deadline, such as a pre-sale repaint or a strata repaint with a date.

Household comparing quotes
Planned, three quotes
A gallery of your own before and after work, a cost guide that says what is included and a quote form.
Exterior or roof job
Dry months
Separate pages for exterior and roof painting, since roof jobs are larger and attract product shoppers.
Real estate agent
Short deadline
A trade page with turnaround, insurance, licence and how invoices work.
Strata manager
Dated
Experience with common property, access arrangements and insurance.

What the site is for

A painter's site has two readers who rarely want the same page.

The household wants to see walls that look like theirs, and to know what the quote will cover. The gallery comes first, with the cost guide beside it. The agent or strata manager wants to know if you are insured, licensed, quick and easy to invoice. They get their own page, linked from the footer and from the home page, with the turnaround, the access arrangements and the buildings you have done. Both pages end in the same short form.

A trade of sole traders

painting businesses in the whole country have 20 or more employees, so volume work for an agent or strata manager is spread across many small firms.

A licence line and a price line

NSW Fair Trading, QBCC and the ACCC

In NSW, painting and decorating over $5,000 labour and materials is licensable trade work and the licence number goes in advertising. Queensland has a painting and decorating licence class and requires one for work over $3,300. A price per square metre that leaves out preparation or access may be a part price under the Australian Consumer Law.

The licence goes on the trade page and the footer. The cost guide states what is included in each figure.

Web design for painters: your questions

Why a separate page for agents?
Agents and property managers want different things from a household. They want turnaround, access arrangements, insurance and how you invoice. A page for them stops those details cluttering the page a home owner reads.
What does a before and after gallery need?
Your own photos, taken from the same angle, with the suburb and the job type beside each. A slider is fine, as long as the images load fast on a phone.
Should a painter's site show prices?
A cost guide that explains what changes the price helps. If a figure per square metre appears, it must say what it covers, because a part price breaks the Australian Consumer Law.
Does a painter need a licence on the site?
Where the work needs one, yes. In NSW painting and decorating over $5,000 is licensable and the number goes in advertising. We do not state a rule for Victoria, because we could not confirm one.
What does the quote form ask?
A name, a phone number or an email, and a comment. The comment box invites the address and the job. The form does not ask for a budget.
Can the site show roof painting?
If you do it and hold what it needs. Roof work can fall under other licence classes. NSW lists roof tiling and roof plumbing as separate trade categories.
How quickly can a painter's site be live?
Quickly. We rebuilt an Illawarra carpenter's site in a day and moved a builder's from Wix in about a week. The gallery takes as long as it takes you to send photos.
