Web design for carpenters, built as a front desk

When you are on a roof you cannot answer the phone. The site shows the work, says what you take on and asks the right three questions.

What the site is for

A carpenter's site does the job of a receptionist who knows the trade. It shows what the work looks like, says what you take on, and collects the details before you ring back.

We build it from your phone's photos. Each job gets a page with the suburb, the timber and a few lines about what was involved. A short services list sits above the gallery, and a towns list beside it. The form asks three things and no more. When you are free you open the enquiry and ring the right person back.

A site for one person's patch

Local

A sole trader covers a stretch of coast or a band of suburbs. The site says where, and a page about a far town gives Google a reason to show you there.

  • A town list that matches how far you will drive
  • A page for a far town only when you have done jobs near it
  • A phone number that works from a ladder: voicemail, then a text-back message
  • A form that prompts for the job, the suburb and the size in the comment box

Who writes in, and what they need to see

Buyers compare photos of finished work. Small repairs are price checked.

Deck or pergola buyer
Planned, in spring
A page for each, with your own photos, the suburb and the timber. Pergola cost and deck builder cost lead the suggestions Google offers.
Door, window or repair
This week
A short list of repairs you take and the towns you cover, with a form that invites a description.
Fit-out or framing for a builder
Repeat work
A page on the work you do for builders, your insurance and your availability.
Handyman job
Small and price led
A plain note on which jobs you take and which you do not.

Which jobs the site can advertise

NSW Fair Trading and QBCC

In NSW, residential carpentry, decking and pergola structure work over $5,000 labour and materials needs a licence, and carpentry includes the concreting for deck and pergola footings. In Queensland, work over $3,300 needs a licence and decking, pergolas, fences and gazebos fall in the structural landscaping class. A handyman can only advertise the work below those limits.

The licence class and number go on the site once a job can pass the limit. The jobs page lists what you take, and a deck or pergola page does not show up for a handyman who cannot do it.

Work we run for carpenters

All Round Carpentry is a one person carpenter whose site we rebuilt in a day. Ovas Build is a builder whose quote form and project pages we built. We have no lead count for All Round Carpentry yet.

Web design for carpenters: your questions

Why does a carpenter's site need a list of what I do not take?
It saves calls. A sole trader cannot take every job, so the site says which work you want and which you pass on. Fewer wrong enquiries arrive.
How many photos should the gallery have?
As many as you have good ones. Each is labelled with the suburb and the job. Twenty of your own beat two hundred stock images.
What should the form ask?
A name, a phone number or an email, and a comment. The comment box has a prompt for the job, the suburb and the rough size. That qualifies the enquiry without a longer form.
How does the site work when I cannot answer?
The number goes to voicemail with a message that says when you call back, and the form asks for a time. A person on a roof does not want an extra tab.
Can the site show a from price for a deck?
Only with the total a customer pays, or a range that includes everything. A from price on its own is a part price under the Australian Consumer Law.
Should I use my own photos or stock ones?
Your own. Buyers compare finished work, and stock or generated images invent details a carpenter cannot stand behind.
Do I need a page for each town?
Only for towns where you have jobs to describe. The carpenter whose site we rebuilt in a day has 18 suburb pages and 11 service pages, each with true local content.
