Web design for landscapers, where the portfolio is the product

Buyers save photos and come back weeks later with a shortlist. The site is a set of project pages that hold up to that second look.

Two industries under one word

The ABS counts landscape construction and gardening services as different industries, with different shapes.

What the site is for

A landscaping site is looked at twice. The first visit is a scroll through photos. The second comes weeks later with a partner and a shortlist, and by then the buyer wants the detail.

So each project gets a page. The plan comes first, then the stages, then the finished garden. The suburb is written beside every photo, because it tells a local buyer that you work near them. The design and build path and the maintenance path split at the home page.

Two paths from the home page

A designer who builds and a gardener who mows are different businesses to the buyer.

Design and build
Slow, high value
Project pages with your own photos, the suburb, the materials and a short plan. A cost guide that says what the range includes.
Retaining wall or paving
Planned
A page on drainage and engineering sign-off in plain words, because buyers search why walls fail.
Turf, irrigation or planting
Spring and early summer
One page for each, so a search for turf laying finds a page about turf.
Maintenance contract
Recurring, price sensitive
A plain page and a phone number. A tight list of the suburbs on your route.

Structures are licensed, planting may not be

NSW Fair Trading, QBCC and SA Health

In NSW, structural landscaping is a licence category over $5,000. In Queensland, a structural landscaping licence class covers carports, decking, fences, gates, gazebos, pergolas, ponds, retaining walls, paving, irrigation and sports courts, for work over $3,300. In South Australia a business that advertises herbicide weed control is treated as a pest control business and must hold the licence.

The licence goes beside retaining wall, paving and structure pages. The maintenance page does not mention weed spraying unless the pesticide licence is held.

Trade sites we have built

We run no landscaping site yet. All Round Carpentry builds decks, pergolas and sheds, the nearest outdoor structure trade, and its project and service pages are our model. Ovas Build is a builder. Neither is a landscaping result.

Web design for landscapers: your questions

How should a landscaper's gallery be organised?
By project, not by photo. Each project has a page with the suburb, the scope, the materials and photos from before to finished. Filters by type, such as retaining walls or paving, help a returning visitor.
Why separate design and build from maintenance?
They are different buyers and very different job values. A design enquiry may take weeks and be worth thousands. A maintenance enquiry is a regular visit at a fair price.
Should the site show prices?
A cost guide that states what a range includes matches how buyers search. A per square metre figure that leaves out base, removal or access can be a part price under the Australian Consumer Law.
Do I need a page on why retaining walls fail?
It answers a real search, and it shows you know about drainage. The page explains it in plain terms and says when an engineer signs off. It does not give instructions for a do it yourself wall.
What does the quote form ask?
A name, a phone number or an email, and a comment. The comment box invites the suburb and the job.
Can the site mention weed spraying?
Not in South Australia without the pesticide licence. Other states have their own rules for pest management, so we ask what you hold first.
Can I use stock photos of gardens?
We use your own. Buyers compare finished work, and stock or generated images invent details.
