What to bid on and what to block

Fencing is also a sport, and wire, electric and dog fences are other products. The negatives list does a lot of the work.

A campaign for each material

Someone typing Colorbond fence installers near me has chosen a material. An ad about fencing in general wastes the click. We build the account with a campaign for each material you fit, and an ad group inside it for the job: new fence, replacement, gate, extension.

Each has its own ads and a landing page with your photos of that material, the lengths you fitted and what a quote includes. You see which materials bring quotes and what each costs.

Keeping out the sport and the kit

The word fencing is shared with a sport. Lessons, clubs and equipment appear in the same results. Wire, electric and dog fences are other products, and hardware chains sell fence kits.

We add negatives for each, check them against your work, and read the search terms report every week. If you also supply kits or gates, those terms stay.

The pool deadline

A pool fence certificate is needed to sell or lease a property with a pool in several states. NSW, Queensland and Victoria differ on how long a certificate lasts and who inspects. The person searching has a date, so the ad should reach them fast, and the page should name the steps in their state.

We run pool compliance as its own campaign with its own budget and landing page. Landlords and agents are the readers, so the page says how quickly you can inspect and repair.

The spring ramp

Search interest in Colorbond and pool fencing climbs from August and peaks between September and November, then falls through autumn. The budget follows that: low in May and June, higher from late winter. The Trends scale is relative, so it tells us the shape of the year and not the number of searches.

If your diary fills in October, we turn the ads down. A click you cannot serve is wasted.

Counting what happened

We count calls from the ad, taps on your number and quote forms sent. The form asks for a name, a phone number or an email, and a comment. We keep out the actions Google counts by itself, such as clicks on a map inside the ad. The enquiries are reported back to Google Ads so the account judges itself on enquiries and not only clicks.

Your account, your spend

You create the Google Ads account and add your own card. You pay Google directly for clicks, and we never hold your payment details. We are added as a manager and you can remove us whenever you like.

Each month you get a short report on spend, clicks, enquiries and cost per enquiry for each campaign, with the changes we made. We do not promise a number of enquiries.

A radius around the depot, state-wide for compliance

Local

Installs are limited by the crew's drive. Pool compliance ads can reach a whole state where the rules are state-based.

  • Presence targeting around the depot, with out-of-area suburbs excluded
  • The budget lifted in August and September and eased in May and June
  • A separate daily cap for pool compliance, so a spring surge does not drain the install budget
  • Storm damage ads switched on only after a local event, and only if the diary has room

A quote is the conversion, with two urgent exceptions

Most fence jobs are planned. Pool certificates and storm damage have a deadline.

The licence number is part of the ad in NSW and Queensland

NSW Fair Trading, the QBCC and the ACCC

NSW requires the licensee's name and licence number in all advertising for work it licenses, which includes the internet. Queensland requires the licensed name and QBCC number in advertising, websites and social media included. The ACCC says a price that is only part of the cost must come with the total, and claims such as a lifetime guarantee must be true.

The licence goes in an ad extension and on the landing page. Ads quote a per metre figure only with what it includes. Ad copy uses the word Colorbond for the material and not the brand's logo.

Google Ads for fencing contractors: your questions

How is a fencing account set up?
With a campaign for each material, one for pool compliance and one for repairs. Each has its own budget, ads and landing page, so a spring pool surge does not drain the Colorbond budget.
How do you keep out searches for the sport?
With negative keywords for lessons, clubs, equipment, foils, sabres and classes, and with ads that say fence and the material. We read the search terms report each week.
Should the ads show a price per metre?
Only with what it includes: posts, rails, gates and removal. A part price needs the total beside it. We usually start with a range on the landing page and no figure in the ad.
When should the budget go up?
Search interest rises from August, peaks between September and November, and falls by May. We raise the budget in late winter and review it weekly. We also lower it when the diary is full.
Can the ads run for storm damage?
Yes, after a local event and only if you can attend. We switch the campaign on for the affected area and off when the work is done.
What do you track?
Calls from the ad, taps on your phone number and quote forms sent. Actions Google counts by itself are kept out of the total.
Do we keep the account if we leave?
Yes. You create the account and add your card, and we are added as a manager. If you cancel, you remove our access and keep the account and its history. The add-on is month to month and cancels on 30 days notice.
