Web design for lawyers, one page for each area of practice

A person charged on Saturday, a couple separating and a home buyer read a law firm's site very differently. The site gives each of them their own page.

The site says where you appear, and the answer differs by practice area

Local

A criminal firm is found by court location. A family firm is found across a metro region. A conveyancer is found within a state's law. The structure of the site follows.

  • Criminal and traffic: a page for each court and office you attend, because searches name the offence and the town
  • Family: one firm-wide page for each type of matter, with phone and video consultations if you offer them
  • Conveyancing: wording that follows your state's licensing and shows your licence details
  • Wills and estates: local and referral-led, so the people and the office come first
  • Employment: a page that states the 21-day deadline for an unfair dismissal application

Six kinds of matter, six ways to arrive

Practice areas are not interchangeable. The first screen of each page changes with the buyer.

Criminal and traffic
Now to days
A phone number that dials on a tap, the hours it is answered and the courts you attend. A charge, a court date or a licence is at stake.
Family law
Weeks of research
How a matter runs, what it costs and how to book a first call. Cost words come first in searches.
Conveyancing
Days after an offer or listing
A fixed fee guide where you can state one, your licence details and how an agent or broker refers a client.
Wills and estates
Planned, or sudden after a death
Who can make a will, what an estate involves and a calm way to start.
Personal injury
Limited by the limitation period
Page content that follows your state's advertising law. In Queensland, WA and the NT that sharply limits what a site can say.
Employment
21 days for unfair dismissal
The deadline stated plainly, with a prompt to call straight away.

Plain information, not advice

A law firm's site explains what a matter is, what the usual steps are, who will deal with it and how to start. It does not give advice, and it does not promise a result. A person facing a charge or a separation reads closely and slowly, and a short, honest page does more for them than a long one that sells.

We build a page for each practice area you want more of. Each is written for someone who is still working out what is happening, and each ends in a way to call.

Lawyers and offices

Each lawyer gets a page. Each office gets a page with an address and a map. The firm's site is where a referred client confirms that you are real, so details need to be exact and match the Business Profile.

Quick on a phone

People read these pages on a phone, often at a bad moment. We build plain, fast pages with a tap-to-call number and a short form. We built the site for Karnib and Co that way, with more than 40 pages in plain English, and we host it.

Rule 36 governs every word on the site

Law Society of NSW, under the Legal Profession Uniform Law

Rule 36 of the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules says advertising must not be false, misleading or deceptive, or likely to mislead, offensive or prohibited by law. A solicitor must not give a false impression of specialist expertise, and must not use the words accredited specialist or a derivative unless accredited by the relevant professional association. The Law Society of NSW accredits in 14 areas of law. The Australian Consumer Law applies as well.

Practice pages say practises in, has experience in or focuses on, and use accredited specialist only for an accredited solicitor in the accredited area. A page for each lawyer lists admissions accurately. Licensed conveyancers are not solicitors in NSW, so their pages say so and show their licence details. Every page is approved by a lawyer at the firm before it goes live.

Work we run for lawyers

Karnib and Co is a criminal and traffic law firm in Wollongong and Liverpool. We built, migrated and host its site. It is our only law firm, so it proves nothing for family law, conveyancing, wills or employment.

Web design for lawyers: your questions

Why does each lawyer need a page?
Many people were given a name by a friend, an agent or another lawyer, and they look it up before calling. A page with admissions, areas of practice and a direct way to contact gives that search somewhere to land.
What does the contact form ask?
A name, a phone number or an email, and a comment. The comment box says not to include sensitive details. The case is discussed on the phone.
Can the site call us specialists?
Only for a solicitor accredited in that area by the relevant association, and only in the accredited area. Otherwise write practises in, experienced in or focuses on.
Can the site show client testimonials?
There is no Australia-wide conduct rule that bans them, but Rule 36 and the Australian Consumer Law apply. They must be genuine and current, and the ACCC says businesses must not post fake reviews. In Queensland and WA, personal injury advertising laws can make testimonials impermissible on a personal injury page.
Should the site publish fees?
Buyers search cost first. Say what you can state honestly: a fixed fee for a conveyance, how hourly rates work for a defended matter and what the first call costs. Where the cost depends on the matter, say that and explain what it depends on.
Can one site cover all six practice areas?
Yes, on separate pages. A single page that lists every area cannot serve any of them well, and the buyers differ too much.
How does the site help someone charged out of hours?
The number sits at the top and dials on a tap, the page says when it is answered and the page loads quickly on a phone. A late-night caller will not wait for a heavy page.
What is on the pages for a firm with two offices?
Each office has its own page with an address, map, hours and the lawyers who work there. That is how Karnib and Co is built, with one for Wollongong and one for Liverpool.
