Google Business Profile suspended: home-based fix
What to do when your Google Business Profile is suspended or fails verification and you work from home in Australia: the likely causes, the documents to gather, how to appeal, and what not to do.
On this page
A suspended Google Business Profile for a home-based service business is usually fixed by correcting what broke Google's guidelines and then filing one well prepared appeal. The common causes are a home address shown publicly, a name that does not match your registration, and an address that is not a real place you work from. This page sets out the steps in order, using Google's own help pages, with the Australian documents that help. It is accurate as at November 2026, and Google changes the process, so check the linked pages as you go.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Google says it may suspend or disable Business Profiles that do not follow its guidelines. An account restriction suspends the profiles you manage. A profile removal makes the profile invisible to the public and stops you acting on it. The appeals tool shows the decision date, the reason, the policy and whether it can be appealed.
For a home-based business, check these first.
| Likely cause | What Google's guidelines say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Home address shown publicly | A service area business should hide its address from customers | Clear the address and set a service area |
| Name does not match your registration | Business name and address on documents must match your registration exactly | Use your real trading name, no keywords or suburbs added |
| Mailing address or virtual office | A business that rents a mailing address and does not operate from it is not eligible | Use the place you actually work from, hidden, with a service area |
| Service area too wide | The area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving from your base | Narrow it to where you travel |

How do I run a profile from home without showing my address?
Set the profile up as a service area business. Google's guidelines say that if you run a business from your residential address you should clear the address from the profile and use a service area instead. Customers then see the areas you serve and not your front door.
Do this before you appeal. An appeal that leaves the original problem in place will fail, and Google allows only one appeal per decision.
What documents should I gather in Australia?
Google lists business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills as evidence, and says the name and address on each must exactly match your registration. Gather these before you file.
- Your ABN record. Look yourself up on ABN Lookup and screenshot the entity name, ABN and any trading name.
- Your business name registration, if you trade under a name other than your own.
- Your trade licence where one applies, showing your name and licence number.
- A recent utility bill or phone bill showing the business name or your name and the address you work from.
- Photos of your vehicle with signage, your tools and your workspace.
- A short written explanation: what the business does, that you travel to customers, and that you have hidden your address under the service area rules.
If the name on your documents differs from the name on the profile, change the profile to match. Do not change your documents to match the profile.
How do I appeal?
Google's steps are short, and you get one go.
- Make sure the profile now meets every guideline.
- Open the appeals tool and sign in with the Google Account linked to the profile.
- Select the profile and the decision you are appealing.
- Add your evidence and explain why the profile should be reinstated.
- Confirm and submit.
If your account is restricted, appeal the account first, then the profile. If the appeal is denied, you may be able to request an additional review with new evidence. Do not create a new profile for the same business.
Why does verification keep failing?
Google decides which verification methods you can use, based on your business type, region and hours, and you cannot choose. The options include a code by phone or text, an email, a postcard, a live video call and a recorded video. For a live video call Google asks you to be at the business and show your location, your products or tools and proof you manage it, and live calls are only available within your business hours. If your phone number is a call-centre line or an automated system, it cannot receive the code. See Google's verification page.
For a video from home, the proof Google asks for is your location, your tools and signs that you run the business. Vehicle signage, equipment and your trade licence are the natural things to show.
What we've seen across our client sites
We look after Business Profiles for client businesses and have not published a suspension count, so we do not give a rate. Two things we have seen are worth passing on.
- Profile traffic hides in Search Console. On an appliance repairer's site, the profile's website and appointment links pointed at the old
http://address, and Search Console showed those clicks as separate http pages that Google had never crawled. When enquiries dipped, that series fell from 35 to 19 clicks and looked like an organic ranking loss. Point the profile's links at the https address. - A phone number can belong to more than one listing. Google sends verification calls to the number on the profile. A number that appears on an older listing for another business can send the code to someone else. Search Maps for your number before you use it.
For the other half of local visibility, see Google Business Profile and the local map pack, and for tracking calls and website visits from the profile, see which leads came from your website, Google Ads and Google Business Profile.
What not to do
- Do not create a second profile for the same business.
- Do not add suburb names or keywords to the business name.
- Do not file several appeals in a row. Each decision allows one.
- Do not pay anyone who promises reinstatement. Only Google decides.

Common questions
- Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
- Google suspends or disables profiles that do not follow its guidelines. For home-based service businesses the usual causes to check are a home address shown publicly, a business name that does not match your registration, and a virtual office or mail drop address. The appeals tool shows the reason and the policy it relies on.
- Can I run a Business Profile from my home address?
- Yes, as a service area business. Google's guidelines say a service area business should hide its address from customers and set a service area instead. A business that rents only a mailing address and does not operate from it is not eligible.
- How do I appeal a suspended Business Profile?
- Fix anything that breaks the guidelines first. Then open Google's appeals tool, sign in with the account linked to the profile, select the decision, add your evidence and explanation, and submit. Appeals can only be submitted once per decision, so prepare the evidence before you click.
- What documents help an appeal in Australia?
- Google lists business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills. In Australia that usually means your ABN record, your trade licence and a phone or electricity bill, with the business name and address on every document matching your registration exactly.
- Should I create a new profile instead?
- No. Google's guidance says not to create a new profile for the same business. A duplicate can cause further suspension.
- Why does my verification video keep getting rejected?
- Google decides which verification methods you can use and the video must show your location, equipment and proof you run the business. Google decides which methods you can use. For a live video call it asks you to be at the business and show your location, your tools or products and proof that you manage the business, and live calls only run within your business hours.
