What custom website development actually costs in Australia
Real numbers on what custom website projects cost in Australia, where the money goes versus Wix, Squarespace and WordPress, and how Pagecog's monthly plans compare.

Search "custom website development cost" and you'll get nowhere. One site says $500, the next says $50,000. Both are right, which is why neither helps you.
Here's the honest version. We'll show you what drives the price, when custom is worth it, and what the Australian market actually charges — most custom projects land somewhere between $4,000 and $35,000 depending on scope. We'll also tell you why a custom build gives you more over time than Wix, Squarespace or WordPress, and how our own monthly-plan pricing fits in.
Why the quotes are all over the place
"Website" means a lot of different things. A five-page brochure site and a full online store are both "a website", and they're nowhere near the same job. So the first thing to look at is scope, and whether that scope matches what your business actually needs.
The cheap builders also leave a lot out of their number. Your time, the add-ons, ongoing support, the cost of moving when you outgrow it. None of that shows up in the sticker price.
What drives the cost
Size and scope
This is the big one. A few pages is quick. Dozens of pages, multiple user types and integrations is not. More features means more planning, more building, more testing.
Custom design, not templates
We don't use templates. We design from scratch around your brand and your customers. That takes longer than dragging blocks around, but you get a site that's faster, clearer, and built for your audience instead of someone else's.
Integrations
Booking system, newsletter signups, CRM sync, payment flows. Each one is real work. The more your site has to talk to other tools, the higher the cost and the more useful the end result.
Content
Some clients hand us all the copy and images, ready to go. Others need a hand writing and sourcing it. If we're doing the content too, that adds to the scope.
Support and hosting
A custom site still needs a home, and most agencies charge for hosting and a monthly care plan on top of the build. Hosting is free with us, it's Cloudflare, costs us next to nothing so we don't charge for it. Factor ongoing support into any quote you compare — it's small next to the build, but it never stops.
What the market charges
Most Australian agencies quote custom work in one of three bands.
Starter, $4,000 to $8,000
For small businesses that need a clean, simple presence. A handful of custom pages, mobile-first, fast, with the SEO structure built in.
Mid-range, $6,000 to $18,000
More pages, a blog, integrations like bookings or a CRM, and proper analytics so you can see what's working. Usually some content planning in here too.
Advanced, $20,000 to $35,000
Complex builds. E-commerce, multiple languages, custom data flows, your own business logic. These take longer but you get full control and room to grow.
A good agency will tell you exactly what's in, what's optional, and where every dollar goes. No surprise invoices.
What Pagecog charges
We used to quote in those bands too. We don't anymore. Pagecog builds and runs your whole online presence — website, social, SEO and GEO — on a monthly plan, with no big upfront build cost. The bands above are still useful for judging any fixed-price quote you're comparing us against. See current pricing.
Why not just use WordPress, Wix or Squarespace?
Fair question. They're cheaper up front. The catch is they cost you later. Here's how.
You're stuck with templates
You can move things around, but you can't change how they work. Your site ends up looking like everyone else's, on someone else's structure.
They're slow
Most off-the-shelf builders are full of bloat. Slow load times, especially on mobile, which hurts SEO and conversions. Google rewards fast, clean code, and measures it through Core Web Vitals. WordPress in particular needs constant plugin updates and patching, and you carry that upkeep forever.
The costs creep
Wix and Squarespace bill monthly. More storage, pay extra. Connect a domain, pay extra. Better analytics, pay extra. Want a feature they don't have, or a real custom look? Either it's not supported or you're back paying for custom development anyway.
You're locked in
You can't pick up your site and host it elsewhere. You can't export it cleanly. If they change the rules or the price, that's your problem now.
SEO is limited
Template builders aren't built with technical SEO in mind. You get limited say over headings, structured data, metadata and URLs.
With us you own the code. It's portable, fast, made for you, and ready to grow.
How to budget
- Start with the goal. What's the site for? Leads, sales, explaining your services?
- Decide what's essential. List the pages and features you genuinely need at launch.
- Be honest about content. Writing your own copy is fine. Just don't underestimate how long it takes.
- Think about timeline. Faster isn't always better. Leave room for testing and feedback.
- Keep a buffer. Things come up. Leave a bit of room.
We'll help you scope it properly before we start.
Questions to ask any developer
Ask us, ask anyone you're considering.
- How long, start to finish?
- What happens if we change scope mid-way?
- Templates or built from scratch?
- What support is included?
- Do I own the code, and can I host it anywhere?
- Can you show me fast sites you've built?
The answers tell you a lot.
Why we're a good fit for most Australian businesses
We're not trying to be the cheapest. We're trying to be the most straightforward.
- Fast. Most projects go live in weeks, not months. We don't drag things out.
- No upselling. We build the site you asked for, clean and fast. We won't pad it with things you don't need.
- Australian. Based here, built here, hosted here. Faster speeds, no time zone lag.
- Built to grow. You don't need everything on day one. We design so you can add later.
- You own it. All the code is yours. Host it anywhere.
The short version
A custom site isn't a fancier template. It's a tool that fits your business, grows with you, and doesn't box you in. The market charges $4,000 to $35,000 for one as a project, and that's fair for the work involved.
We do it differently: your whole online presence — website, social, SEO and GEO — built and run on a monthly plan, upfront about price, timeline and outcome. Every site is fast and clear from day one. See current pricing.
